Executive Summary: Chongqing (China) is at its prime during Mar–Apr, Oct–Nov. Characterized by city after dark, it ranks #42 on the Luxe score and is best suited for just me and the group chat planning a a long weekend or about a week journey.

The feeling

Built on hills where the Yangtze meets the Jialing, Chongqing stacks streets, bridges and trains in ways that feel cinematic at night. Summers are famously hot; spring and autumn are kinder.

✺ Your Luxentravel trip

Three days in Chongqing

Three days in a mountain megacity where streets stack on streets, monorails slip through buildings and every night ends over a bubbling pot of fiery hotpot.

Save to My trips
  1. Day 1

    The stacked city

    Morning

Start in Jiefangbei, then wander down the steep lanes toward the river, where the city's layers become clear.

    Afternoon

Ride the monorail to Liziba station, where the train runs straight through a residential building.

    Evening

See Hongyadong lit up like a stilted palace on the cliffs, then your first hotpot, as spicy as you dare.

  2. Day 2

    Over the Yangtze

    Morning

Ride the Yangtze River Cableway across the water for views of the skyline and bridges, then visit the Three Gorges Museum.

    Afternoon

Head west to the old river port of Ciqikou, with its narrow stone lanes, teahouses and snack stalls.

    Evening

Take the drive up to Nanshan for the glittering view over the peninsula, then a late bowl of Chongqing noodles.

  3. Day 3

    Rock carvings of Dazu

    Morning

Take a day trip to the Dazu Rock Carvings, a UNESCO site of Buddhist sculptures carved into the cliffs.

    Afternoon

Walk among the carvings at Baodingshan, then return to the city.

    Evening

A final night river cruise where the Yangtze meets the Jialing, with the city's neon reflected in the water.

Where to stay

The Yuzhong peninsula near Jiefangbei, central to the riverfront, the sights and the food.

Our tip

Maps struggle with Chongqing's levels; the street you need may be ten floors above you, so allow extra time and use elevators and escalators.

When

Best Mar–Apr, Oct–Nov; still lovely May, Dec.
