Executive Summary: Chengdu (China) is at its prime during Mar–Apr, Oct–Nov. Characterized by city after dark, reset & restore, it ranks #36 on the Luxe score and is best suited for just me and the two of us and with the kids and the group chat planning a a long weekend or about a week journey.

The feeling

A famously unhurried city of teahouses, opera and mouth-numbing peppercorns, with the giant panda base just outside town. Spring and autumn avoid the summer humidity.

✺ Your Luxentravel trip

Three days in Chengdu

Three days in a famously unhurried city of giant pandas, bamboo teahouses and mouth-numbing peppercorns, where afternoons are meant for tea and conversation.

Save to My trips
  1. Day 1

    Pandas and teahouses

    Morning

Arrive at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding at opening, when the pandas are most active and feeding.

    Afternoon

Spend the afternoon in a bamboo chair at a teahouse in People's Park, perhaps with a traditional ear cleaning.

    Evening

Watch a Sichuan opera performance with its face-changing, then a first taste of real mapo tofu.

  2. Day 2

    Temples and alleys

    Morning

Visit Wenshu Monastery and its vegetarian teahouse, then the Wuhou Shrine.

    Afternoon

Wander the Wide and Narrow Alleys and the lantern-lit lanes of Jinli.

    Evening

Settle in for a Sichuan hotpot, with a split pot if you prefer a milder broth on one side.

  3. Day 3

    The Giant Buddha

    Morning

Take the high-speed train to Leshan to see the Giant Buddha, carved into the cliff above the rivers.

    Afternoon

View the Buddha from the water by boat, then return to Chengdu.

    Evening

End with skewers and cold beer, then a stroll around Taikoo Li.

Where to stay

Near Taikoo Li and Chunxi Road, central to the teahouses, temples and food.

Our tip

If you are unsure, ask for wei la, or mildly spicy; kitchens happily adjust the chili, and the numbing tingle of Sichuan pepper is the real thrill.

When

Best Mar–Apr, Oct–Nov; still lovely May, Sep.
