Executive Summary: Finnish Lapland (Finland) is at its prime during Dec–Mar. Characterized by snow & silence, wild & remote, it ranks #31 on the Luxe score and is best suited for with the kids and the two of us planning a a long weekend or about a week journey.

The feeling

Above the Arctic Circle the winter light turns blue and pink. Clear, dark nights between late August and March give the best odds for the northern lights.

✺ Your Luxentravel trip

Three days in Finnish Lapland

Three days above the Arctic Circle, where the winter light turns blue and pink, the dogs are eager to run and the nights are kept for watching the sky.

Save to My trips
  1. Day 1

    Into the Arctic

    Morning

Fly into Ivalo and transfer through snow-heavy forest to the fells around Saariselkä.

    Afternoon

Head out on a husky safari, gliding across frozen lakes and through silent pine forest behind an eager team.

    Evening

Settle into a glass-roofed cabin and watch for the aurora from your bed, with hot berry juice close at hand.

  2. Day 2

    Reindeer and the wilderness

    Morning

Visit a reindeer farm to learn about herding traditions and ride in a sled through the snow.

    Afternoon

Snowshoe into Urho Kekkonen National Park, where the hush is broken only by the crunch of snow underfoot.

    Evening

Warm up in a traditional sauna, then roll in the snow before a dinner of local fish and lingonberries.

  3. Day 3

    Sámi culture at Inari

    Morning

Drive north to Inari and visit the Siida museum to learn about Sámi culture and the Arctic environment.

    Afternoon

Walk out onto frozen Lake Inari or take a snowmobile across it, then return south as the light fades early.

    Evening

Join a guided aurora hunt, driving away from village lights to find a clear patch of sky.

Where to stay

A glass-roofed cabin or log chalet in the Saariselkä area, close to Ivalo airport and the national park.

Our tip

Cloud cover matters more than the aurora forecast; check cloud maps and be ready to drive toward clear sky.

When

Best Dec–Mar; still lovely Sep–Oct.
