Executive Summary: Tulum (Mexico) is at its prime during Dec–Mar. Characterized by sun & slow, reset & restore, it ranks #47 on the Luxe score and is best suited for the group chat and the two of us planning a a long weekend or about a week journey.

The feeling

Barefoot beach hotels on the Caribbean, with freshwater cenotes a bike ride inland. The dry season from December to April is the sweet spot.

✺ Your Luxentravel trip

Three days in Tulum

Three barefoot days between the Caribbean and the jungle: Maya ruins on the cliffs, cool cenotes inland and long evenings in candlelit beach restaurants.

Save to My trips
  1. Day 1

    Ruins above the sea

    Morning

Arrive at the Tulum archaeological site early, when El Castillo stands above the turquoise water with few people around.

    Afternoon

Spend the afternoon on the beach below the hotel zone, swimming and reading under a palapa.

    Evening

Watch the light fade over the jungle, then dine by candlelight along the beach road.

  2. Day 2

    Cenotes in the jungle

    Morning

Cycle or drive to Gran Cenote for a swim in clear freshwater among stalactites and small turtles.

    Afternoon

Continue to Dos Ojos or a quieter cenote for snorkeling through caverns lit by shafts of sunlight.

    Evening

Return for a temazcal sweat lodge ceremony, followed by a slow dinner in town.

  3. Day 3

    Lagoons of Sian Ka'an

    Morning

Take a boat into the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO site of lagoons, mangroves and reef, watching for dolphins and birds.

    Afternoon

Float through the ancient Maya canals near Muyil, then rest in the shade back at your hotel.

    Evening

End with a sunset swim and grilled fish on the sand.

Where to stay

A low-slung eco-hotel on the beach road, or a quieter boutique stay in the jungle near the cenotes.

Our tip

Bring reef-safe sunscreen and plan swims for early morning; some cenotes ask you to shower first to protect the water.

When

Best Dec–Mar; still lovely Apr, Nov.
