Executive Summary: Serengeti (Tanzania) is at its prime during Jun–Oct. Characterized by wild & remote, it ranks #62 on the Luxe score and is best suited for with the kids and the two of us planning a about a week or two weeks or more journey.

The feeling

Endless plains and the planet's largest land migration. The dry months are prime game viewing; the southern plains host calving season early in the year.

✺ Your Luxentravel trip

Three days in the Serengeti

Three days following the great migration from a tented camp, with dawn game drives, long afternoons on the plains and nights listening to lions under canvas.

Save to My trips
  1. Day 1

    Into the central plains

    Morning

Fly from Arusha by light aircraft to Seronera, watching the plains unfold below.

    Afternoon

Head out on your first game drive among the granite kopjes, where lions and leopards often rest in the heat of the day.

    Evening

Sundowners on the plains, then dinner under the stars back at camp.

  2. Day 2

    Balloon over the plains

    Morning

Rise before dawn for a hot-air balloon flight over the Seronera River valley, followed by a bush breakfast.

    Afternoon

Fly north toward the Mara River, depending on where the migration is, and settle into your next camp.

    Evening

Listen for hyenas and lions from your tent as the plains go quiet.

  3. Day 3

    Waiting at the river

    Morning

Set out early to the Mara River, where wildebeest and zebra gather on the banks before crossing.

    Afternoon

Wait patiently with a picnic lunch, watching for crocodiles and the sudden rush of a crossing.

    Evening

Final sundowners and a fireside dinner, sharing the day's sightings.

Where to stay

A mobile tented camp that moves with the migration, paired with a camp in the central Serengeti.

Our tip

Light aircraft have strict luggage limits; pack in soft duffel bags and choose neutral colors for game drives.

When

Best Jun–Oct; still lovely Jan–Feb.
